What is Dance?

Ballet - has very particular rules about how the dancer must stand and move.  It provides good body alignment for the dancer.  The dancer must train carefully as to prevent injury to the knees and ankles.  Ballet is a theatrical form of dance which can be a very expressive art form, telling stories and showing emotions.

Jazz - to master jazz one must also master ballet technique.  Jazz dancers' strong and sharp movements are aided by ballet technique.  This form of dance can take many paths from traditional, lyrical, contemporary and can be influenced by hip hop styles.

Tap - was born in the United States during the 19th century.  The name comes from the tapping sound made when the small plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard floor.  This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician.

Modern - a style of theatrical dancing that is not as restricted as classical ballet; movements are expressive of feelings.  It usually refers to concert dance.

Hip Hop - is a cultural movement that began among urban African-American culture in New York City.  It has recently come into the Christian culture to be used in ministering to young people.
